Field Hockey Drops Road Contest at Saint Michael’s, 1-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. (October 22, 2019) -- Offense has been at a premium lately for the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team, which had won each of its last two games by a score of 1-0. On the road on Tuesday afternoon, the Ravens' offense was shut down, as they were handed a 1-0 loss of their own by the Saint Michael's Purple Knights in Northeast-10 Conference play at Duffy Field.

With the loss, the Ravens fall to a 7-8 (6-5 NE10) record, while the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's improve to 3-12 (3-8 NE10) on the year. Despite the loss, Franklin Pierce held steady in the sixth spot in the NE10 standings with three games to play. The top eight teams will qualify for the NE10 Championship.

After being held to one goal in each of their last two games, the Ravens looked to change that early in the first quarter. With 11 shot attempts in the opening frame, the Ravens were able to pepper the Saint Michael's goal with six on-target shots, but all six were turned aside by junior goalkeeper Talia Torkomian.

The second quarter saw the game's only goal, after the Purple Knights were awarded a penalty corner and capitalized on the opportunity in the 18^th minute. Junior goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) made the first save on senior forward Makayla Foster, but the latter was able to find her own rebound and bury the ball into the left side of the net for her seventh goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce dominated the stats sheet on Tuesday, but could not find the net. The Ravens finished the game with advantages of 26-9 in shot attempts, 14-5 in shots on goal and 15-5 in penalty corners, but were unable to capitalize.

Torkomian (2-2) earned her first career shutout by making 13 saves and getting a helping hand from sophomore back Erin Hammer, who did her part with a defensive save. Barnes (7-8) suffered the loss after making four saves on five shots on goal.

The Ravens are back at Sodexo Field in Rindge for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 26, as they take on Pace University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
