1-0 Win over SCSU Makes it Three Straight for Field Hockey

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 18, 2019) – Only three days after the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team finished off Mercy College in overtime, the Ravens picked up their second consecutive 1-0 win on Friday afternoon. This time, the victory came against Southern Connecticut State, and via a goal in the opening frame at Jess Dow Field. Senior forward Madison Gagnon (Milford, N.H.) scored her second goal of the season off of an assist from freshman forward Christine Jarowicz (Kennebunk, Maine) 12:33 into the first quarter.

The win moves the Ravens up to 7-7 (6-4 NE10) and brings their record back to .500 for the first time since the end of September. Meanwhile the Owls of SCSU fall to 1-12 (1-9 NE10).

The first quarter was all Franklin Pierce as they fired off six shot attempts. All six found the target, and one found the back of the net. Jarowicz, the overtime hero from Tuesday's game, dribbled through four defenders before getting a pass behind SCSU senior goalkeeper Brianna Craft and to the stick of Gagnon, who just had to tap the ball into the net.

The rest of the game was much more even, but the Ravens still found ways to gain an edge over the Owls. Over the course of the game, Franklin Pierce chalked up advantages of 10-2 in shot attempts, 10-2 in shots on goal and 6-1 in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) (7-7) earned her second straight shutout, and her fourth of the season, by saving the two shots taken by SCSU.

Craft (1-12) had an impressive day, making nine saves on 10 shots on goal, but still suffered the loss.

The Ravens will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 22, on the road at Saint Michael's. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Duffy Field in Colchester, Vt.
