Strassburg Sets School DS Record, Jarowicz Provides OT Winner as Field Hockey Nips AIC, 1-0

RINDGE, N.H. (October 15, 2019) -- Regulation would not be enough on Tuesday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team got the job done eventually. Freshman forward Christine Jarowicz (Kennebunk, Maine) knocked home her first career goal 8:13 into overtime at Sodexo Field, as the Ravens picked up a 1-0 victory over visiting American International in Northeast-10 Conference play. Senior back Jessica Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) chalked up her 15^th career defensive save along the way, to establish a new program record.

With the win the Ravens pick up their second win in a row and improve to 6-7 (5-4 NE10), while AIC falls to 8-5 (4-5 NE10).

The first half saw lots of back-and-forth play in the midfield, as both teams went into the break with one shot attempt. AIC's only shot attempt of the first half came off of a penalty corner in the middle of the second quarter. The shot from the middle of the circle by sophomore back Wynona Shaw beat junior goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.), but could not beat Strassburg, who sent it away at the left post to keep the game scoreless.

For Strassburg, it was her eighth defensive save of the season, as well as the 15^th of her career, which put her all alone in the top spot among the program's all-time leaders. She made the record her own by breaking a tie with Kim Jaksina '12.

The Yellow Jackets went to work on offense on the other side of halftime, attempting two shots in the third quarter, both of which were turned aside by Barnes. Barnes (6-7) finished with three saves to notch her second shutout of the season, and the third of her career.

The fourth quarter is when the Ravens took over, as they were able to take four shots in the final quarter of regulation and followed up with four more in overtime. The final shot of the game came with 1:43 left in the overtime session and came off of the stick of a diving Jarowicz. Jarowicz was found in the middle of the circle, in front of the right post, by sophomore forward Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands), who got an assist on the goal and now leads the team in points (5-3-13).

In front of the AIC net, freshman goalkeeper Nikki Bates (2-2) finished with three saves against four shots on goal and suffered the loss.

The Ravens will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 18, on the road against Southern Connecticut State for an NE10 matchup at 3 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
