Field Hockey’s Scoring Drought Continues in 3-0 Loss at No. 7 Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (October 9, 2019) -- The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team took to the road on Wednesday afternoon to try to turn things around after being shutout in the first two games of October. The offensive struggles continued on Long Island though, in a 3-0, Northeast-10 Conference loss at No. 7 nationally ranked Adelphi.

The loss puts the Ravens to a 4-7 (3-4 NE10) record and is their third consecutive loss. Adelphi's record rises to 9-2 (7-1 NE10). Franklin Pierce is now without a goal over a span of 186:53.

The first quarter saw lots of back and forth play, with a low amount of offense on both sides of the ball. There were two shots in total in the opening quarter, one for each team and neither was on net. The second quarter saw the Panthers strike early, in the 19^th minute. Senior back Danielle Powers opened the scoring three-and-a-half minutes into the quarter off of a rebound. Franklin Pierce junior goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) made the first save and a diving effort for the second but was too late, as Powers buried her second goal of the year.

The Panthers scored one more before the end of the first half, in the 24^th minute, to make it 2-0. Senior Elissa Frien scored off an assist from fellow New Yorker Danielle Kempf.

The third quarter was scoreless, but the Panthers were able to fire off four shot attempts, as part of an evening where they outshot the Ravens, 23-7. The defense stood tall up until the 49^th minute, when Adelphi was able to score its third goal, this time off of a penalty corner. Katelyn Zaneski scored with Frien getting her second assist of the night and Jackie Brown getting the secondary assist.

On the defensive front for the Ravens, senior captain and midfielder Allison Collins (Sandown, N.H.) and senior back Caitlin Menzies (Methuen, Mass.) each collected defensive saves on the night. Barnes (4-7) finished with eight saves against 11 shots on goal.

At the other end of the field, Adelphi graduate student goalkeeper Stephanie Peragallo (4-0) stopped all three shots on her cage to post her second shutout of the season.

The Ravens are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they take on Mercy College at 5 p.m. on Sodexo Field, for an NE10 contest.
