Field Hockey Takes Care of Molloy, 2-0

RINDGE, N.H. (September 28, 2019) – It was not always pretty on Saturday afternoon, but in the end, the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team did enough to take care of business against visiting Molloy at Sodexo Field. After the Ravens came up empty on eight first-half corners, freshman forward Meghan Winn (Newburyport, Mass.) and sophomore forward Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands) potted second-half goals to lead the way in a 2-0 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-4 (3-1 NE10), while Molloy falls to 1-6 (1-4 NE10).

The offense largely sputtered through the opening 30 minutes on Saturday for the Ravens. Despite eight corners in the first half -- including seven in the first quarter -- the team managed to come up with only four shot attempts, including three on goal, as the game went into halftime scoreless.

Things went better on the other side of halftime though, as Franklin Pierce rang up second-half advantages of 8-2 in shot attempts, 4-2 in shots on goal and 9-1 in penalty corners. For the game, the Ravens posted dominant edges across the board statistically, of 12-4 in shot attempts, 7-3 in shots on goal and 17-2 in corners.

The Ravens finally broke the ice shortly after halftime, in the 37th minute, on their 13th corner opportunity of the afternoon. The play wound up with the ball on the stick of Winn, in front of and outside the right post, approximately five yards from goal. Her first shot was turned aside by Molloy freshman goalkeeper Ally Saigh, but Winn buried her own rebound to cash in her third goal of the campaign.

A 54th-minute insurance marker created the 2-0 final, as van Doorn notched her third score of the season as well. The midfield sprang the offense the other way, which allowed senior forward Madison Gagnon (Milford, N.H.) to lead a 2-on-1 into the circle from the right-wing side. She slipped a centering pass through to van Doorn, who did not miss from the goalmouth. It was Gagnon's second assist in as many games.

Junior goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) was tested only three times, but turned aside all three to notch her second shutout of the season, and the third of her career. She improved to 4-4 on the season.

At the other end of the field, Saigh (1-3) stopped five of seven shots on the Molloy cage in defeat.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 1, when they remain home to host St. Thomas Aquinas in an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
