RINDGE, N.H. (September 21, 2019) – For much of Saturday afternoon at Sodexo Field, neither team could generate much in the way of offense, as the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team and No. 8 nationally ranked Stonehill were stuck in a scoreless tie through regulation. Then, suddenly, there were chances at both end of the field. At the north end, Franklin Pierce senior forward Madison Gagnon (Milford, N.H.) was stymied on a breakaway and put her follow-up wide. Minutes later, at the south end, sophomore forward Olivia Cameron cashed in the game-winner for Stonehill, as the Skyhawks pulled out the 1-0 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-4 (1-1 NE10), while Stonehill improves to 3-2 (3-0 NE10).

Early in the day, Franklin Pierce held a 5-3 advantage in shot attempts at halftime, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Stonehill would clamp down after the intermission, as the Ravens were held without a shot attempt in the second half. Stonehill chalked up four shots in the second half, but put only one of them on goal, as the game headed into overtime scoreless. The Skyhawks would ultimately come up empty on six penalty-corner opportunities, while the Ravens could not cash in on five of their own.

Each team's strongest scoring opportunity of the afternoon would come in the latter stages of the overtime period. In the 67^th minute, Gagnon had a golden opportunity for Franklin Pierce, as she was sprung on a breakaway from about 30 yards out. With Gagnon behind the defense, Stonehill junior goalkeeper Katie Lammando came off her line to cut down the angle. Gagnon's initial shot from inside the top of the circle was stifled by the keeper, but the rebound came straight back to Gagnon. Moving towards the right-wing side, she was able to get a second shot off, but put it wide of the cage on the right side.

Just over two minutes later, Stonehill would find the game-winning goal at the other end. The lone score of the afternoon came off of a broken play, which led to a frantic scramble in the Franklin Pierce goalmouth. With junior goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) already beaten and sophomore back Julianne Sacco (Southborough, Mass.) sprawled on the ground at the goal line as the last line of defense, Cameron had multiple chances to hack the ball home from the left post. Cameron eventually got a shot past Sacco, and though it was swept back out by another member of the Franklin Pierce back line, the ball has already slipped over the line to end the game and allow Stonehill to escape with the win.

Barnes (2-4) finished with five saves against six shots on goal and suffered the loss in net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the field, Lammando (3-2) stopped all five shots on her cage to pick up the win and her second shutout of the season.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Bentley for an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Bentley University Turf Field in Waltham, Mass.
