Winn Nets First Two Career Goals as Field Hockey Blanks New Haven Again, 3-0

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (September 15, 2019) – For freshman forward Meghan Winn (Newburyport, Mass.), her first collegiate goal was not enough on Sunday afternoon. Instead, she added her second career marker as well, to cap off a five-point week and lead the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 3-0 win on the road in non-conference play at New Haven. Sophomore back Julianne Sacco (Southborough, Mass.) provided the game-winning goal as the Ravens completed the two-game weekend sweep of the Chargers.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-3, while New Haven falls to 1-4.

Following yesterday's Northeast-10 Conference affair between the two sides, Sunday afternoon got off to a sleepy start at DellaCamera Stadium. In the first half, the two teams attempted just four shots apiece, Franklin Pierce recorded the only two shots on goal, and there were just three combined penalty corners.

Franklin Pierce would wake up and take control after halftime, as the Ravens chalked up advantages of 16-6 in shot attempts, 9-4 in shots on goal and 8-3 in penalty corners over the final 30 minutes.

The Ravens finally broke the ice in the 39^th minute, off their fourth corner attempt of the third stanza. The original shot on the play came from the top of the circle, but was knocked down by the defense. Sacco, who had inserted the ball on the corner, had made her way into the middle of the circle, just a few yards in front of the goal. She was able to corral the loose ball there, and quickly shuttled it past New Haven junior goalkeeper Natalie Shaker to open the scoring with her second goal of the campaign.

From there, it was The Meghan Winn Show, as the freshman provided both of Franklin Pierce's fourth-quarter insurance markers. Less than a minute into the frame, freshman forward Christine Jarowicz (Kennebunk, Maine) let fly with a shot from the right-wing side of the circle. She would pick up her first collegiate point with an assist, as Winn redirected it home at the left post. For Winn, it was her first goal at the college level, after she notched her first point with an assist against Assumption earlier in the week.

Winn tacked on another deflection goal in the 55^th minute to complete the scoring and round out the 3-0 victory. This one came off another corner attempt, as Franklin Pierce converted for the second time in nine attempts on the afternoon. The Ravens ran the corner play to the right side for sophomore forward Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands), who teed up a shot from there. Winn got her stick to the ball en route and tipped it to the back of the cage to put the game on ice.

Junior goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) stopped all four shots on her goal over the opening 56:04 to pick up the win (2-3) in front of the Franklin Pierce cage, as the Ravens notched their second shutout in as many days. Senior Kaitlyn Benoit (Goffstown, N.H.) took over for the final 3:56 to finish things off and did not face a shot.

Shaker (1-4) collected eight saves against 11 shots on goal in the losing effort for New Haven.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they return home to host Stonehill in an NE10 contest. Game time is set for noon at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
