Field Hockey Edged by SNHU on Senior Day, 1-0

RINDGE, N.H. (November 3, 2018) – A 15th-minute goal by junior Laura van der Doorn would ultimately spoil Senior Day on Saturday afternoon for the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team. The tally by the Southern New Hampshire forward would stand as the only goal of the game at Sodexo Field, as the visiting Penmen chalked up a 1-0 victory over the Ravens in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-10 (3-8 NE10), while Southern New Hampshire improves to 9-7 (7-4 NE10). The loss officially eliminated Franklin Pierce from postseason contention.

The only goal of the contest came 14:09 into the first half. SNHU senior forward Maddie Holt started things on the play, as she brought the ball into the circle on a rush and pushed the ball towards the net from the left side. It was then van der Doorn who tracked the ball down and had the finish at the right post for her sixth goal of the season.

SNHU controlled play for stretches of the first half, as the Penmen posted an 11-3 advantage in shots, including 9-2 in shots on goal, in the period. Franklin Pierce battled back in the second half, to cut the final SNHU margins to 14-8 in shot attempts and 10-7 in shots on goal. The Ravens earned five corners in the second half, but were unable to find the equalizer.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) finished with eight saves against nine shots on goal and suffered the loss (6-10) for Franklin Pierce, while junior back Jessica Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) added a defensive save along the way. Senior Melanie Rennie (9-7) stopped all seven shots on her cage to pick up the win for SNHU and notch her third shutout of the season.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Nov. 6, when they close out the home portion of their schedule with an NE10 contest against Assumption. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
