Field Hockey Downed at No. 3 Stonehill, 6-3

Rachel Lapointe

EASTON, Mass. (October 9, 2018) – A trio of first-half goals gave No. 3 nationally ranked Stonehill a lead it would never relinquish on Tuesday night at W.B. Mason Stadium. Senior forward Rachel Lapointe (Greenfield, Mass.) had her first career multiple-goal game for the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team, but the Ravens were defeated, 6-3, by host Stonehill in the Northeast-10 Conference contest. Senior forward Kacie Smith had a hat trick in the victory for the Skyhawks, while freshman forward Olivia Cameron added a pair of goals of her own.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-5 (1-3 NE10), while Stonehill improves to 7-2 (3-1 NE10).

Stonehill popped three goals in the opening 31 minutes of play on Tuesday night and never looked back. Cameron opened the scoring with her second of the season in the 12th minute, as she banged home a centering pass from Smith. In the 28th minute, senior forward Carly Anderson knocked home a rebound for her sixth goal of the campaign. Just 3:17 later, in the 31st-minute, Smith came in on a breakaway and buried her team-leading 13th of the year to push the lead out to 3-0.

The Ravens would cut the gap to 3-1 before halftime. Lapointe scored her first of the night, and her second goal of the season, in the 32nd minute, as she deflected home a cross from the right side by junior midfielder Allison Collins (Sandown, N.H.).

It only took Stonehill 38 seconds into the second half to reclaim the three-goal lead. Cameron capped her two-goal outing, as she finished in a one-on-one situation off a turnover. Less than three minutes later, in the 39th minute, Smith pushed the lead out to 5-1 as Cameron forced a turnover in the midfield and sent a long pass ahead to set up Smith's second goal of the game.

In the 55th minute, senior forward Ashley Silva (Laconia, N.H.) notched her second goal of the year to briefly cut the gap back down to 5-2. Silva had the tip-in at the left post off of a drive towards the cage from senior midfielder Raegan Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.).

Stonehill required only 94 seconds to make it a four-goal margin again. Smith capped her hat trick in the 56th minute, with her 15th goal of the season, unassisted.

Lapointe created the 6-3 final at the 63-minute mark, as she finished off her first collegiate-multiple-goal game. Freshman midfielder Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands) provided the assist, as Lapointe scored off of a tip near the right post.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) finished with three saves against nine shots on goal and suffered the loss (4-5) in front of the Franklin Pierce goal.

For Stonehill, senior Sara Freedman (7-2) started, made one save against three shots on goal over the opening 61:10 and picked up the win. Sophomore Katie Lammando took over for the final 8:50 and allowed a goal on the only shot she faced. Senior back MacKenzie Greenberg added a defensive save along the way.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they return home to host Southern Connecticut State in an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
